Sweetened exclusively with the vibrant essence of blueberries and the rich notes of pure maple syrup, this easy recipe promises a taste of berry heaven. While this culinary creation was directly inspired by a recent, deeply meaningful trip to Maine, this post is an invitation to explore something far beyond just a recipe. It’s a journey through serene landscapes and profound personal reflection, interwoven with stunning photographs that I sincerely hope you will enjoy.

A Heartfelt Journey to Maine: Family, Time, and Reflection

This particular post holds a special place, serving as a moment of catharsis. Witnessing the passage of time reflected in your parents’ faces, watching them grow older, is an undeniably poignant and often difficult experience. Living a significant distance from both of my parents means that time, in its relentless march, creates noticeable gaps between visits. And when those precious moments of reunion finally arrive, the changes can be quite startling. This past Labor Day, I made the journey to Maine to visit my father. Having not seen him in approximately four years, the impact of time’s embrace was particularly profound.

After a long and distinguished career, one of which I remain immensely proud, my father and my stepmother chose to retire to the tranquil beauty of Maine. They found their haven on seven secluded acres nestled deep within the woods, yet still close enough to the rugged, breathtaking coastline. Their home is a place of wild contrasts: the buzzing of summer insects, the occasional visit from a bear, and the biting cold of long winters. But it also offers the unparalleled beauty of lush, verdant woods, a vibrant display of summer flowers, wild apple trees, and the warm, golden embrace of early morning sunshine. Their existence there is one of peace and quiet constancy, a world utterly distinct from the bustling, often chaotic rhythm of my everyday life.

As a blogger, my natural inclination is to share every aspect of my travels. Looking back through the photographs from this trip, I can’t help but chuckle at the striking absence of food pictures. This is so unlike me! I enjoyed fresh lobster on several occasions, yet not a single photo captured those delicious meals. Instead, my lens seemed drawn to everything else – the scenery, the moments, the essence of Maine and family.

The Quirky Charm of Rural Maine Life

One memorable day, my father and I embarked on an unexpected adventure: searching for an object to mark the elusive access panels to his septic tank in the backyard. The goal was practical – something that could be easily found even under several feet of winter snow. Yes, this truly happened, and in remote Maine, such a quest can surprisingly become a highlight of the day!

We pondered the options: a charming lighthouse replica? Perhaps a rustic wishing well? Ultimately, the decision was far more eccentric and delightful: a replica 16th-century knight! And so, our “Guardian of the Septic Tank” journeyed home with us. I know I’ll forever cherish the memory and chuckle at the sheer absurdity and charm of that particular Maine expedition.

An Authentic Maine Country Fair and Culinary Inspiration

Another day brought us to a quintessential country fair, a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. The air was thick with the aroma of classic carny food, mingling with the earthy scent of livestock. We witnessed the incredible strength of oxen in their pulls, the agility of sheepdogs expertly herding their flocks, and encountered countless animals with big, curious eyes, fluffy ears, and a kaleidoscope of feathers. Booths overflowed with artisanal goat-milk soaps, intricate quilts, and handcrafted goods, alongside tables laden with those wonderfully sugary, utterly irresistible maple candies. But the true highlight, the spark that ignited the inspiration for this recipe, was the homemade blueberry ice cream.

I was in absolute heaven, immersing myself in the rich, authentic culture of Maine. The simplicity, the community spirit, and the unparalleled freshness of local ingredients – especially those plump, juicy blueberries – resonated deeply. It was a sensory feast that went straight to the heart, and to my future recipe ideas!

The Unstoppable March of Time and Profound Gratitude

Despite the joyous atmosphere of the fair, the heat was intense, and the strong sun proved to be particularly challenging for my dad. It was a stark reminder, yet again, of the relentless march of time and the fragility of life. Life, truly, is far too short. One moment, you’re a teenager, impatiently wishing for time to fast-forward. Then, in what feels like a mere blink, you’re in your 40s, and everything has shifted. Yet, in another sense, not everything is different; life remains a pendulum, constantly swinging between exhilarating highs and challenging lows. And I know, with another blink, I’ll be 70 myself. Every choice, every memory, every experience undeniably shapes us into the individuals we become. I just sometimes wish there weren’t so many of them that have pulled me further and further from my family over the past 25 years. That, I confess, is a regret, especially when I’m confronted with what I’ve missed.

I’ve always held a unique affection for my dad, not only because he is my father but because I see so much of him in myself, and perhaps, a younger version of me in him. He doesn’t know this, but when I was a teenager visiting him, I stumbled upon an old diary of his. At around 16 years old, I read his entries about me when I was just a toddler. He recognized himself in me, and it seemed to concern him then. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp what he meant. But now, I absolutely do. And I understand that I am where I am in my life, in part, because of that inherent connection. I want my father to know that it is all good. We cannot dwell in the past or become overly consumed by past decisions or regrets. That approach will never change a single thing. Instead, we can only embrace and be profoundly thankful for every single day, and trust in a higher power to guide us. Regardless of the good, the bad, or the ugly situations we encounter or create, a greater good can emerge, rewarding our efforts as long as we seek it. The ultimate result? Profound gratitude. Absolute gratitude for my life, for my experiences, and especially, for my cherished family.

Indeed, this apple truly didn’t fall too far from her tree. And that, I’ve come to realize, is more than okay. Because her tree is, and always will be, her hero.

Love you Dad.

Crafting the Perfect Blueberry-Maple Ice Cream: A Wholesome Indulgence

{The homemade blueberry ice cream my stepmom and I shared at the Blue Hill Fair was truly heavenly. This recipe, however, is my own unique “mapled-up” rendition, lovingly created to capture that same blissful feeling, but with an added depth of flavor. It’s remarkably easy to make, eliminating the need for a cooked custard base. Instead, it’s naturally sweetened solely by the vibrant, beautiful blueberries and the rich, pure essence of natural maple syrup. The result is nothing short of delicious – truly, OMGsh, soooooo good! Every scoop is reminiscent of a perfect summer day, the nostalgic charm of a blueberry ice cream booth at a country fair, and the sweet temptation of the maple candy stand right next door.}

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup divided
  • 2 eggs lightly beaten
  • pinch kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp fresh grated nutmeg divided
  • 8 oz fresh blueberries

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream, half-and-half, 1/4 cup maple syrup, eggs, salt, and 1/8 tsp nutmeg. Add to the ice cream maker and process according to manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer to a plastic container for freezing, and freeze until almost set.
  • While ice cream is setting, make the blueberry-maple syrup. In a medium saucepan, heat the blueberries, remaining 1/4 cup maple syrup, and 1/8 tsp nutmeg until bubbly. Simmer ~5 minutes until the berries burst, and the mixture gets syrupy with a deep rich color. Remove from the heat and cool completely. Once cool, put in the fridge to chill further.
  • After the ice cream has chilled in the freezer an hour or so and starts to set, stir in the fully cooled and chilled blueberry-maple syrup. Return to the freezer to finish freezing. Yields: a yummy box full of heaven.

Notes

For the freshest and most authentic flavor, always prioritize using fresh local, organic dairy and eggs if they are accessible to you. Regarding concerns over raw egg in ice cream, rest assured: the freezing temperatures inhibit bacterial growth. Furthermore, opting for eggs from free-range chickens, when available, significantly reduces the initial chance of any potentially harmful bacteria being present.
Separately, the blueberry-maple syrup is incredibly versatile and ridiculously delicious on its own! Imagine it drizzled over warm waffles, fluffy pancakes, or used as a sweet topping for shortcake – the potential for culinary delight is endless!
